Discover a Traditional Family Recipe: Ingredients and Preparation of a Cultural Delight

Every family has a cherished recipe, passed down through generations, that holds a special place in their hearts.   • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons rum (optional)
  • 2 packages ladyfinger cookies (approximately 24 cookies)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder


Begin by whisking together egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl until well blended. In a saucepan, bring the milk to a boil. Slowly pour the boiling milk into the egg yolk mixture while stirring continuously. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it boils. Boil for one minute, then remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Cover tightly and chill in the refrigerator for one hour.

In a separate bowl, combine the heavy cream and vanilla extract and whip until soft peaks form. Whisk the mascarpone into the yolk mixture until smooth. In a small bowl, combine coffee and rum. Split the ladyfingers in half, and dip each into the coffee mixture, soaking them thoroughly. Arrange half of the soaked ladyfingers at the bottom of a dish.

Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers, then half of the whipped cream over that. Repeat the layers with the remaining ladyfingers, mascarpone mixture, and whipped cream. Dust the top with cocoa powder. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, until set.
